Tuesday, September 29: Class began with a review of current events. Students then created their own trading card for an explorer. If absent, see Ms. Nay for the requirements. Students then went over the documents (W. 42-48) for the upcoming DBQ Essay. We discussed the documents as a class, then the students individually answered the thinking questions. These questions are not a part of the document, but are intended to help analyze the document. In any remaining time, students organized their essay using W. 49.

Monday, September 21: Today we took the physical features of the U.S. map test. If absent, come to a lab to make up or make an appointment. Students then took notes on Tools and Reasons for Exploration (if absent, see PowerPoint on Documents page and take notes on W. 27). Next students heard about the voyages of Christopher Columbus. We then discussed some of the other explorers and what they accomplished. To do so, we highlighted their names on W. 28-31. Students then had time to work on their homework, which was to read W. 30-31 and complete W. 32-33.

Students completed W. 34 with a partner. We then learned about how Spain built an empire in the New World, using a PowerPoint to complete W. 35-39 (if absent, see Spain Builds an Empire Powerpoint on Documents page). Students recorded items that originated in the New and Old Worlds on W. 39 (if absent, see the PowerPoint on the Documents page or a peer for the notes). Then, using Explorer Trading Cards, students completed the chart of other European Explorers on W. 40-41 (if absent, see Ms. Nay for further instructions). We then began Unit 2: Age of Exploration. Next, we looked at the chapter overview on W. 21. Students then took notes on a Foldable on W. 22 about Pre-Columbian Europe (see Documents page if absent; you my get the notes from a peer, but be sure to read T. 38-42). In the lecture, we discussed the different events in European history that explain European culture and brought about the Age of Exploration and Renaissance. As a class, we then read W. 23 about changing maps in a changing world. Students then completed W. 24 with a partner, then we discussed answers as a class. Lastly, students practiced understanding Latitude and Longitude with W. 25-26.

Lastly, students read W. 28-29 with a partner and answered questions 1-11 on W. 32. We reviewed distinct cultural attributes of all of the tribes discussed so far this year, as well as theories of human migration to the Americas. We also reviewed the Physical Features map of the United States. At the end of class, we took the pre-test for our next unit (if absent, come to a lab to make it up).

After the test, we briefly discussed the events of 9/11. We then began talking about Pre-Columbian Europe. We went over the Inca PowerPoint (documents page) and finished the study guide (W. 6). Next we read textbook p. 26 to sum up the Inca. We then watched a documentary on the Inca and completed the video guide (W. 15). If absent, you have two options: 1) Find the answers to the questions online (answer using complete sentences), 2) Come to a lab to watch the video to get the answers (use complete sentences).

Students responded to the following prompt and wrote a paragraph to answer the question using the document: "Based on the picture, how can we tell that the Aztec were an advanced civilization?" Next, students were divided into pairs or groups and assigned a section in the textbook from p. 28-33 to read. They were to fill in the chart on W. 16-17 for their assigned region, then create a small poster to present the information to the rest of the class. If absent, use the textbook pages to complete the chart. In Class: DBQ Paragraph for W. 12, DBQ Paragraph for W. 14, Regional tribes poster, Native American Cultures Across the U.S. Chart (W. 16-17) Homework: DBQ Paragraph for W. 14 Friday, September 4: If we didn't finish in the previous class, we completed the poster presentations and filled in the rest of the chart on W. 16-17. Next we practiced reading maps, analyzing information about Native American populations in North America in A.D. 1500 (W. 18-19).
