Tuesday, September 26: Today we continued our explorer game, completing entry #2 on W. 29 (if absent, meet with your group to find out what you missed). We then did some preparation for the Columbus trial next week. If absent, see Ms. Nay for your role in the trial, which will take place next Monday. Witnesses became familiar with their statements and lawyers read the witness depositions and prepped the witnesses. With the remaining time, we discussed how Spain built an empire, taking notes on W. 40-41 with the PowerPoint found on the Documents page (please complete if absent).

Monday, September 19: We finished the Pre-Columbian Europe PowerPoint and notes on W. 22. If absent, see the PowerPoint on the Documents page to fill in the rest of the information and complete W. 22. Today we discussed latitude and longitude, practicing it using W. 25-26 and a map of the world. We then discussed how to write a DBQ Paragraph, and students received the scores from their first try at writing one. These may be re-done for a higher score. We read the information on W. 23 and completed W. 24. Students wrote a paragraph using the images on W. 24 to answer the following question in a DBQ Paragraph: What do these maps tell us about European understanding of the world at the time? If there was any time left, we started discussing latitude and longitude.

We then learned about European reasons for exploration (the 3 G's) and took notes on W. 27 (see PowerPoint on Documents page). We then started our Explorer Experience with each table choosing a captain to sail on an expedition with. Lastly, Ms. Nay told the story of Christopher Columbus' expedition. Students were then assigned roles and given some research as we prepare for a trial of Christopher Columbus (if absent, see Ms. Nay for the information for both activities today). As each group presented, students completed W. 16-17. If absent, please use T. 29-33 to complete W. 16-17. We then reviewed for the test next class period. Lastly, we went over which pages will be due in the workbook next class period (Ref B, W. 2-14, 16-17).

If absent, be sure to investigate the difference between the two. We also discussed how to write a DBQ paragraph, since everyone has now had practice writing one. Next, students were introduced to the Native North Americans, as well as the Gale Reference Library and the Library of Congress. Students were randomly assigned one Native American group or region and were instructed to research that group. If absent, see Ms. Nay for your assigned group.
Due: none In Class: W. 16 or 17 (Tribe Research) Homework: Tribe research complete Friday, September 9: Today students received a few minutes to touch up their tribe research. We then took a few minutes in class to discuss the events of 9/11 and answered student questions. Students were then divided into groups to create a presentation on the region they researched. Groups will present next class (they will have a few minutes to finish their preparation next class). If they finish early, they may finish their physical features maps. If absent, be sure to contact your group to know what you need to do to help them be prepared.
