Tuesday, October 28: Today we read a book in one day. Each student was given a chapter from the novel Blood on the River to read. After reading the chapter, they summarized it on p. 48 of the workbook. The students then read their summaries to the class, effectively telling the story of the entire novel. Students then watched the Scoring Jamestown video with the songs chosen by their class.
Due: Current Event #1, DBQ Age of Exploration Essay In Class: Blood on the River Chapter Summary (p. 48) Thursday, October 29: Period A3 finished presenting their chapter summaries from the last class. Next students completed the fill in the blanks on their study guide on p. 45 of the workbook (see Prezi link on documents page), the section about Plymouth and the Pilgrims. The students then watched the first 20 minutes of Episode 1 of America: The Story of Us and answered the questions on page 49 of the workbook (if absent, come to an after school lab to view video). Lastly, we discussed the Mayflower Compact, completing p. 50-51 in the workbook. Monday, October 6: Firstly, the class reviewed the Unit 2 test taken last week as remediation for retakes. The class then took a pre-test for Unit 3 (if absent, come after school to make up this pre-test). Next, students looked over the vocabulary words for Unit 3 and drew a small picture by the word to help remember its meaning. Then students filled in the blanks on p. 44 of the workbook as the colony of Roanoke was introduced (http://prezi.com/onitzn536lev/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share). Students were then assigned the task of deciding what happened to the colonists at Roanoke by completing p. 43 of the workbook.
In class: Unit 3 Pre-Test, Roanoke Notes Homework: Finish The Ghost of Virginia Dare (p. 43 in workbook) Wednesday, October 8: Class began by finishing the notes for Roanoke, discussing the different theories of what happened to the colonists. Students then continued the notes on p. 44 with Jamestown and the accompanying Prezi (ihttp://prezi.com/oywifji-bfyv/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share). Students then completed the Scoring History assignment on p. 47 of the workbook. As a class, these song choices were narrowed down until we had a class decision on the score for Jamestown's history. In Class: Finished Roanoke notes, Jamestown notes, Scoring History Homework: Work on DBQ Essay, Study Vocab Friday, October 10: Students began class with the Unit 3 Vocab Quiz (if absent, come after school to make up). They then played the Jamestown Interactive game (URL below) and completed the Jamestown Solutions on p. 46 of the workbook. Students then had the rest of the class period to work on their DBQ essay. The essay will be due the class we return from Fall Break. In Class: The Jamestown Solutions, Unit 3 Vocab Quiz Homework: DBQ Essay (due October 28) Tuesday, September 30: Class began with a look at an example DBQ essay response and a discussion of the expectations of the DBQ essay. Students then reviewed for the test next class by participating in a review activity.
Due next class: Community Experience, Unit 2 assignments in workbook, Unit 2 Test Thursday, October 2: Students were given 10 minutes to review for the test, then took the test. When they were finished, students had time to work on their DBQ essays. At the end of class, we looked over the vocabulary words for the next unit and began labeling the counties map in the workbook.
