Monday, April 11: Today we read a summary of The Iliad and discussed the story. We then started watching Hercules, looking for key features of Greek civilization/mythology.

When it finished, we discussed connections with what we studied and what parts were made up by the creators. With the remaining time, students got together with a partner to create in image from the Iliad that will be on display during our class Olympics. Students read about one Greek philosopher and reported back the class. They completed an assignment about the different philosophers. We then discussed Greek military strategy, then went outside and practiced creating a shield wall. We discussed the purpose of myths and the basic tenets of Greek mythology. We then discussed the main gods in Greek mythology and charted them. They met with their occupations and began their preparations for the simulation. They were then introduced to the other civilizations of Mesopotamia. They received a packet with information about each civilization. They completed a chart about those civilizations. They were then divided into groups and assigned a civilization to create a skit for. See the skit requirements page for more information (in the extras file box in the classroom). We then discussed writing and how we use it in our daily lives today. We also discussed how pictographs could be used to convey ideas, but how difficult it is. Students created pictographs of sentences and tried to get their partner to guess what the pictograph meant. We saw the evolution of pictures turning into symbols which would be a form of writing. We also discovered that some background knowledge is required to understand a pictograph. We discussed the genesis of writing and the practiced writing cuneiform, translating English sentences into cuneiform.
