Monday, October 27: Students had the class period to work on their story lines for the semester project. It must include a summary of the plot, storyboards or script excerpts, and character list. It is due Tuesday, November 4.
Wednesday, October 29: Students had the first half of class to work on their story lines. We then started watching the movie Valkyrie. Friday, October 31: Halloween Parade! When we were in class, we watched Valkyrie. Tuesday, October 7: 8th grade - Explore Test

Wednesday, October 1: Finished watching Empire of Dreams. We then discussed the Storyline part of the semester project, then discussed the parts of Narrative Structure. Friday, October 3: As a class we learned about the Director's Vision and Pre-Production. Students interpreted quotes from directors (see Ms. Nay to pick up a copy if absent), then chose two pages from a novel to modify for the screen, writing on a separate piece of paper what the script would say. In Class: Director Quote Interpretation, Book Adaptation Tuesday, September 23: Students had the entire class period to work on their research papers for their semester project. After the film finished we watched some of the making of the film and completed the Film Analysis.
In Class: Mao's Last Dancer Film Analysis Wednesday, September 17: First we finished watching the making of Mao's Last Dancer. The class then had a Socratic Seminar discussing the film and what can be learned from it. For the end of class, students had time to write their Film Critique for Mao's Last Dancer. Due: Mao's Last Dancer Film Critique Homework: Semester Project Research due September 25! Tuesday, September 9: First we discussed how to write a film critique. We then learned some background information for Mao's Last Dancer, including who Chairman Mao Zedong was, life under Chairman Mao, and excerpts from Li Cunxin's autobiography, Mao's Last Dancer.

We also discussed the addition of dialogue to movies. Then we started watching Singin' in the Rain.

Then continued Film Terms PowerPoint, taking notes on shot duration and lighting. Turned in: Singin' in the Rain Film Analysis Tuesday, August 19: We took some quick notes on the Seven Eras of Filmmaking. We then watched The Great Train Robbery, one of the first films with a storyline. Afterword, read through the "script" of the film and watched it again. Students completed the Motion Picture Analysis Worksheet for the film, and started thinking about their topics for their projects.
Turned in: Film Analysis Homework: Topic Proposal due Monday, August 25 Thursday, August 21: Today we watched Seven Chances, a silent film from 1925 starring Buster Keaton. After the movie, we discussed what we could learn about the 1920s from this film. We also discussed film strategies and qualities that were used in this film that were not in The Great Train Robbery. One paragraph telling me what historical topic your project will be about, why you are choosing it, and a little about what you are planning to do for the project. |
