Monday, August 29: Today we watched some video clips about the Maya. We then analyzed a source on W. 11 and answered the prompting questions. After discussing the source as a class, we learned about the Maya. We completed W. 6 using the accompanying Powerpoint. If absent, you can find the Powerpoint on the documents page. We then watched some videos clips about the Inca. Lastly, we analyzed two more sources about the Inca on W. 12 and answered the prompting questions, then discussed them.

We took notes on the Aztecs on W. 4-5, using the Powerpoint found on the documents page (if you were absent). We then practiced analyzing documents about the Aztecs on W. 13-14. Next, we discussed the difference between primary and secondary sources. Students then wrote a practice DBQ paragraph using one of the sources on W. 13-14. If absent, see Ms. Nay for instructions on this paragraph prompt. If time, students had time to begin their homework assignment. Tuesday, August 23: Class started with a reading quiz (homework from last class T. 16-21). We then finished the Human Migration chart on W. 2 if not finished last class. Students then took a few minutes to work with their table to finish Reference p. A about rules. We then went over the answers together and had a brief tour of the classroom. Lastly, we took a compare and contrast pre-test. If absent, please come to a lab to take this pre-test ASAP. During the pre-test, Ms. Nay checked for textbook covers. In the remaining minutes, we passed back graded papers and explained how they were graded for future reference. For example, spelling on assignments does impact your grade. With extra time, we started W. 7 (Maya or Myth).

For the starter we completed W. 7, "Maya or Myth", and then corrected it. Students became archaeologists and completed W. 8-10, analyzing the documents and answering the questions using complete sentences. We then discussed the documents and what they show about Maya culture. Lastly, we used the Maya PowerPoint to complete the Maya study guide notes on W. 3-4. Due: none In Class: W. 7, W. 8-10, W. 3-4 Homework: Current Event #1 (if not completed in class) Tuesday, August 16: Welcome to 8th Grade U.S. History! This is where you will look to find out what we did in class each day, in case you were absent or just in case you forgot. Today we started class with an ice-breaker activity, where we got to know some of our classmates just a little better. Then we discussed the disclosure document and took a tour of the room. Students received a disclosure today if they didn't get one at Back to School Night. That disclosure is due Friday.

These are due every time a class falls on Tuesday, but this first practice one counts for the first current event. We read an article about different rules for vaccinations in the states, and then completed the worksheet. If absent, please pick up a current event worksheet from Ms. Nay or download one from the documents page and complete the assignment. Remember: the article MUST connect to what we are currently studying in US History. Next, we discussed the community experience assignment and what is expected. Then students took a pre-test for our first unit. Lastly, we briefly reviewed the rules for the class. With their tables, students analyzed evidence of ancient people in the Americas and developed a theory about how and when the first people arrived in America. They then presented their theories to the class. We then discussed the evidence further, completing W. 2 using the Human Migration PowerPoint (See the documents page if you were absent to complete the chart on W. 2).
