Monday, September 17: Today we took notes on the "3 G's of Exploration" on W. 17. If absent, see Ms. Nay or a peer for the notes. Ms. Nay then told the story of Christopher Columbus. If absent, it's recommended that you do a little research on Christopher Columbus' journey. Lastly, roles were assigned for the Columbus Trial, which will take place next week. Students are to read through the information for their assigned role. If absent, you will receive your role when you return.
Due: Workbook In Class: W. 17 Homework: Trial Prep Wednesday, September 19: We learned about mercantilism today. As a class we read W. 18. Students wrote a DBQ paragraph based on the quote on this page. The question is: "According to Columbus, what was Hispaniola like?" Next, students played PIT, with the rules gradually changed to better understand the concept of mercantilism. Due: None In Class: Mercantilism DBQ Homework: Trial Prep Friday, September 21: Students participated in the first episode of the explorer simulation. After, students completed W. 19 about the events of the day. If absent, discuss with a teammate what happened, and summarize it on your page. Students then prepared for the trial. Lawyers met with witnesses to discuss strategies. The trial will take place next class. If absent, check out a textbook from Ms. Nay to complete W. 10-11. We then discussed how to write a DBQ Paragraph. We looked at W. 9, analyzing the image as a class. We then went over the DBQ Paragraph Rubric on Ref D, discussing the expectation. To end, students labeled the physical features map on Ref B, using the list found on the Documents page. The features must also be colored.

Students then took notes on W. 14 about Pre-Columbian Europe (PowerPoint on Documents page if absent). Next, each "team" chose a country and captain for our sea voyage simulation. We also completed W. 7-9, learning what we can from images. Lastly, students were assigned a native North American region or tribe to research (W. 10-11). They used the textbook and internet to complete their row of information. If absent, see Ms. Nay to know which tribe to research. Today we got to know each other with an icebreaker activity. We then went over some of the rules and procedures for this class. Students read an article and we discussed how to use it on the current events assignment. Students also practiced matching news headlines to topics we will study this year. Then, students completed an informal pretest activity. Next, students discussed how people could have gotten to the Americas. They analyzed evidence to come up with their own conclusions. We then learned about the evidence and what the evidence tells us. Students completed W. 2 as we went. The PowerPoint for the chart on W. 2 is available on the documents page. We only started today, so we will finish this chart next class.
