Monday, February 22: Today we took notes on Life in Territorial Utah (W. 32). For each topic in the Prezi, they drew two simple pictures to help remember them.

Tuesday, February 16: Today students presented their posters on conflict and the other students filled out the chart on W. 25. If absent, look at the following textbook pages to complete the chart: T. 146, 164, 170-171, 241. Students then met with a clock partner and read these pages aloud, adding to the chart. Lastly, they completed a Read Stop Write for the previously listed textbook pages.

We then read T. 173 and discussed how the settlers and Native Americans helped or hurt each other. Students wrote some ideas down on W. 26. We then reviewed what a two-voice poem is. With a partner, students wrote a two-voice poem for the conflict between the settlers and Native Americans. Each perspective must say at least ten things. If time in class, students shared their poems. Due: none In Class: Vocab quiz, W. 26, Two-voice poem Homework: none Tuesday, February 9: Today we briefly discussed the Mission to Mars project and how it connected to Utah Studies. We then began our conflict Utah, focusing on the conflict between the Mormon settlers and the Native Americans of the area. We went over the unit guide on W. 23, looking especially at the vocabulary. Students were divided into groups and asked to create a 'machine' that used all five of the vocabulary words. We then discussed how students define conflict. Students completed a small questionnaire about conflict. They then interviewed each other to find out different perspectives. We discussed more about how conflict arises. With a clock partner, students then read T. 144-145 and completed a Read Stop Write. Next, students were assigned a conflict on W. 25 (if absent, see Ms. Nay for your assignment). Students began to research the conflict using the textbook and online sources.
Due: Current Event #2 In Class: RSW T. 144-145, Research on W. 25 Homwork: Finish research column Thursday, February 11: Students met with people who had the same assigned conflict to research to help add to their own information. Then, as a group, they created a poster to teach the class about that conflict. The poster requirements are on W. 24. If absent, create a small poster for your assigned conflict. At the end of class, students participated in an activity recognizing what causes conflict and practicing how to resolve conflict.
