Tuesday, August 26: First students received their workbooks for the semester. We reviewed 'Region', then worked on maps of Utah. The maps are Utah counties, Utah physical features, and natural resources of Utah (p. 7-10 in the workbooks).
Due: Current Event #1 In class: Maps of Utah p. 7-10 in workbook Thursday, August 28: Students wrote a short narrative essay about their favorite location in Utah. As a class, we then reviewed the themes 'Human-Environment Interaction' and 'Movement'. Lastly, Ms. Nay told the 'Counties Soap Opera' to help remember the counties. Monday, August 18: First we corrected the 'How Well Do You Know Utah' worksheet. If students got 100% they received a late work pass. Next we reviewed some of our classroom procedures. Then we started our Geography Unit, discussing how Geography is like a stage and History is the play that happens on the stage. We then had an overview of the 5 Themes of Geography. We will go more in depth on these in the coming days. There was some time at the end to work on the homework assignment: '5 Themes Practice'.
Due: How Well Do You Know Utah? Homework: 5 Themes Practice Worksheet Wednesday, August 20: Class started with correcting the homework from last class and turning it in. We then created our partner clocks. Next was a review of the difference between absolute and relative location. To practice reading a map, students got with their 8 o'clock partner to answer riddles about locations in Utah using the given coordinates. Next we went over the vocabulary words for the Geography Unit and started creating word-art for five of those words. The words must be colored and include the definition. *See the Documents page for the words and definitions.* Due: 5 Themes Practice Worksheet In Class: Places in Utah Homework: Geography Vocab Word-Art (5 words & definitions) Friday, August 22: As a class we went over the Chp. 1 PowerPoint. Then students worked with their four o'clock partner to complete the Chp. 1 Study Guide using the textbooks in class. These Study Guides will be kept to refer to throughout the unit. We also had a get to know you activity.
Homework: Read and sign disclosure Thursday, August 14: We discussed the disclosure, with emphasis on Current Events and the Community Experience, as well as classroom procedures.
